W.I.T.I.A CONFERENCE 2012

Women in Tourism International Alliance (WITIA) a networking organisation that seeks to link tourism professionals all over the world and that  is represented in 30 countries, held its  annual educational forum, for the first time in Africa, from the 22nd to 24th October 2012.

The event was made possible by the efforts of the Kenya Association of Women in Tourism as well as other stakeholders in the industry like the Ministry of Tourism, KTB and KAHC among others. The Association gave a contribution of Kshs. 20,000 towards the event.

The seminar session held at the KWS headquarters was graced by delegates from U.S.A, Sri Lanka, Canada, Nigeria and Tanzania. The seminar was officially opened by Mr. P.N Gakure on behalf of Honorable Cecily Mbarire. Hon Mbarire asked women to take advantage of tourism opportunities particularly during this time that the country has devolved power to the County Governments.“If we look at the entire Kenya and Africa region for instance, opportunities for women investments are many . It has been reported that some of the fastest growing economies are in Africa with an economic growth of over 6%. However, the levels of women participation in this venture are still low.

Others in attendance at the forum were Ms. Anne Musau, Senior Assistant Director of Tourism, Mr. Fred Okeyo , KTB, and Dr.Winnie Kiiru, Elephant Biologist.
