The global travel Service provider Kuoni Travel Holding Limited initiated a Water Management Plan with Hoteliers in 2012 as a result of their commitment to ensure the sustainability of their destinations.

Kuoni acknowledges that Kenya is a water scarce country and that the tourism industry often has access to better quality and a greater quantity of water than local residents. In one comparison, the average tourist consumes 440 litres per day whereas the local population consumes less than 150 litres. Trip advisory found that 71% of customers will make eco-friendly travel choices in the next 12 months.

In addition, water suppliers are overstretched throughout the region and despite new municipal pipelines, the supply is still intermittent and sites rely on ground water reserves, many of which are saline.
