MEETING WITH COAST GOVERNORS AND THE PRESIDENT ON TOURISM RECOVERY.
May, 2014
In a bid to restore and push the tourism agenda the Chairman and the CEO met with 6 Coast Governors who promised to support the industry in the restoration of the tourism industry.
The Chairman and the KTF Board also had an opportunity to meet with the President who gave a raft of measures that are meant to assist the industry in the recovery process. Some of the measures are:
- Revocation of the National Treasury Circular restricting the public service from holding conferences and other meetings in private hotels. It will now be possible for the public sector to hold conferences and meetings in private hotels throughout the country as when the need arises;
- with effect from 29th May 2014, all air ticketing services supplied by travel agents shall be exempt under the VAT Act, 2013 so as to enhance our competitiveness in the region.
- To encourage both local and international flights into Moi International Airport and Malindi Airport, the Government has reduced, with immediate effect, the landing charges by 40 percent and 10 percent, respectively.
The President has committed to be meeting with Tourism Stakeholders once a month until the current crisis has been adequately addressed.
While there is still much to be done, we take the initial measures as a positive first step in the right direction. The Government has opened its doors to us and is listening to tourism.
