In Kenya, the public sector wage bill has been on an increasing trend. There has been a significant increase in employment in the public sector. The wage bill as a percentage of GDP increased from 10.4% in the financial year 2008/2009 to an estimated 12% in the year 2013/2014. The wage bill as a percentage of Government revenue has also increased from 48% in financial year 2011/12 to 50.4% in 2012/13. Kenya’s public sector wage bill has almost doubled over the past five years. The wage bill of 12.5%, as a percentage of GDP during the 2013/2014 financial year is quite high compared to the internationally accepted level of about 7%.
It is in this regard, that the Government, through the Salaries and Remuneration Commission, held the National public wage debate at the KICC to discuss the national wage bill. The Association was represented at the forum, officially launched by the President, His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta.
